Wesleyan Readings (#8): Atonement
WORSHIP LEADER: We believe that Jesus Christ died for all people, and His atonement is sufficient for the whole world.
CONGREGATION: He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. (1 John 2:2)
WORSHIP LEADER: Through His death on the cross, Christ bore the penalty of sin, offering reconciliation to all who believe.
CONGREGATION: God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them. (2 Corinthians 5:19)
WORSHIP LEADER: The offer of salvation is made freely and sincerely to every person, without distinction or exception.
CONGREGATION: God our Savior desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (1 Timothy 2:3–4)
WORSHIP LEADER: Yet not all will be saved, for salvation must be received by grace through faith.
CONGREGATION: Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life. (John 3:36)
WORSHIP LEADER: The atonement is universal in scope, but personal in application, and effective for those who repent and believe.
CONGREGATION: For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God. (Ephesians 2:8)
WORSHIP LEADER: Thanks be to God, who in Christ made a way for all to be saved. Let us believe, receive, and proclaim His redeeming grace.
EVERYONE: Amen
